If I were elected President of the United States the first thing I would do is press Congress into passing a law that would ban all importation of petroleum in ten years.
Ten years doesn’t seem like that long of a time. But it was more than enough time to initiate a space program and send men to the moon and return them safely with 1960’s technology.
How were we able to do it? The space program became a NATIONAL PRIORITY. The brightest and the best minds were assembled and funding was provided with one sole purpose:
Get the job done!
There are many cheaper, cleaner, and more readily available sources of energy than petroleum. The only thing standing in the way of energy independence is powerful lobbying from big oil and a lack of determination to wean ourselves from fossil fuels.
It should be a national priority. It can be done. I would love to see it happen during my lifetime!
And I pray that it will!

One of our main area drilling sites just announced that they are closing down half of their wells due to an oversupply that has accumulated. Shameful that we cannot rely on our natural resources to fuel our needs, eliminate dependence and create jobs. Only if you were President ...
It still amazes me, with ALL of the Government subsidies and promotions of alternative energy, that THEY still do not provide an economical advantage of petroleum. It and natural gas are still the most economical energies out there. If there were cheaper ways of producing energy... why has the free market NOT produce those? Because, they are not, without the government intervention.... what was that solar panel company that just went BK?
Maybe we ought to build the pipeline so that we can have our energy here, rather then being sold to the Chinese. There is so much that can be done, but tree huggers and politicians get in the way.
Richard- you run, I'll vote for you( ps... don't tell Craig Rutman). Seriously... it is not a priority and clouded in politics. We need to get back to relying on US as in us and the United States.
It would take 20 years for America to fully convert over to alternative fuels and solar....the supply of panels is not nearly high enough for it to happen. We need oil but hopefully conserve enough so we do not have to get it from the middle east and Venezuala.
Richard, Now you can see why it doesn't happen. You make the point that we need to get off fossil fuels and SOME of your readers hear you say that we need to find ways to get more. After decades of subsidies to oil, one guy wants to know why after just a couple of years of subsidies to alternative fuels THEY haven't become as useful and cheap as oil. "Tree huggers and politicians" are out numbered by selfish cruel people who don't care what kind of world we leave our kids.
Connie...
Our economy is too dependent of the whims of the petroleum companies ... I'm all for a free market but for whatever reason, anti-competitive laws don't seem to apply to oil companies. Thanks my friend.
Dan...
What I am suggesting is that the public sector absorb some of the R & D and implementation costs. There was nothing free market about the space program! Thanks for the comment.
Erv...
With new technologies, I think that energy could be locally generated with little or no impact on the environment. They key is to change our mindset about oil! Thanks.
Kathy...
It is 100% political. Which surprises me because most of our foreign policy problems would be solved by energy independence! Thanks so much.
Edward...
Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. it would take less if the issue was forced. Just think about the IMMEDIATE effect of passing such a law. Remember, just the mention of the Strategic Defense Initiative brought down the might Soviet Union! Thanks.
I'm with you on this one Richard. But if this can't be accomplished, how about we charge OPEC nations the same price for wheat as they charge us for oil?
Richard,
Love this. Let's set our minds to what we can do and get off all these dependancies on countries that hate us. Just think of how challenging life would be IF they decide they won't sell us oil anymore. We need to be prepared.
Make it happen!
All the best, Michelle
America is best when challenged. I support your plan!
Ok, you should run. I will be behind you! Richard for Prez!
Nice goal and it would be great if our leaders had this or something like it. If we could get off the need for oil and issues in the middle east would disappear in a few years.
You have my vote Richard. Definitely on the same page on this one. We need to be independent from all the haters of America but love our money!
Ri hard...I can see this working if the elected officials didnt have a personal stake in it.
I just want them get the job done!
Tatyana
Your basic premise is incorrect. The market determines what is successful. If the cost of alternative energy is higher then the cost of energy that is from oil, then oil wins. Look at what happened to Solyndra once the subsidies were removed. Same thing for the Spanish solar energy push. Spain, had subsidies and solar energy flourished. Subsidies removed, industry dives. There are many books on the subject comparing alternative energy to oil, etc. If the cost per KWH is higher by a considerable margin then the alternative energy languishes, money for development dries up, etc etc.
Please do not get me wrong, I am all for clean energy. By the way, why do you discount oil being cleaner and cleaner?
I am sure you are driving an electric car, not a gas guzzler and that your home is powered by solar panels. Good for you.
and I would vote for you!!!! There is so much un tapped energy out there. Have a great week-end! (once again, I'm reading your blogs backwards-it's Friday evening).
