Social Search went live this morning on Google. No, not Google Plus – but GOOGLE, the mothership of the internet. They’ve been hinting that social has been influencing the Google algorithm for a while and as of today there’s no more hinting. It’s in your face. Bamm!
Here’s how a search for an Irish Pub in NY looks to me. Remember, I’m in San Francisco. You can see there’s 30 of my friends that have recommendations for me. ![]()
Google has placed that right at the top!
I didn’t know I even had 30 friends in NYC, let alone personal recommendations for me.
The truth is, they might be friends, but they might also be friends of friends. That means they might be someone you don’t recognize, don’t know and yet they just influenced your search result! Wow! They might have written a review on Yelp, or uploaded a picture to Posterous, or liked a YouTube video. Those are the rare instances. The majority of what shows up as a ‘recommendation’ in search is either a share to Google Plus or just a simple +1 by them.
That’s why, even though you don’t think you need another social network, you do need to understand what’s happening. Lucky for you, we have help!

Wow... this is really interesting. I'm sure that many of us don't know this and it will be for great discussion as to what we need to do next. Thanks for the headsup.. I'm going to suggest!
Ugh, I feel like Google is almost blackmailing me into being active on Google+ now. I'm not prepared to suffer the consequences if I don't play ball.
Sounds like another site to track what I do. I got off Facebook because they wouldn't let me back after disabling cookies and I bet this site does the same.
Thanks for the info! I am on google+ but don't do much with it . . . time to make a point to do more with it!
I saw this too on one of my searches for something. I need to really get cracking on figuring this all out or I am going to miss the boat. -Kasey
Thanks Jeremy! I hadn't noticed the change in search results but definitely interesting, to say the least
This change just happened this past week, so it is super important to try & get ahead of the curve.
Jeremy - I think it is important to stay up on all these changes. Thanks for offering this to the AR crowd. I'l be listening in if possible. Hey everyone this is a FREE webinare thanks to Jeremy!

Jeremy - You are probably signed into a social network or Google when you are conducting your search. To reduce bias, you may want to logout before searching.
Oh NO!! Now I feel like I have to be active not only on Facebood, Linkedin, twitter, wordpress, but also on Google +
It is too much!!!!
Tatyana
thanks for the information. I will be registering for the webinar as I see this is something that warrants attention and time learning.
Marc- did you read the post? The post is about social search and the implementation of Google+ into how people will search now.
Looksl ike a great class. I'll try to swing by if I'm able. People often avoid google, worried they might be trying to take over the world. I say it's inevitable so jump in with both feet!
Jeremy, I would love to attend the class but have a DR. appointment at that time. Shoot, is there a way to watch the webinar later? Bummed I'll miss it.
Thanks,
Kim- if you can't make it, make sure to still register. Hopefully I will be able to get a good recording which will be shared with those who attend the webinar.
I'm in. Thank you for posting and for giving me another reason to follow up on my 2012 resolution to become familiar with, and use, Google+. Like with all things social media, I have learned that I don't regret the effort. Instead, I usually recognize that I should have started much sooner.
Thank you again!
That's an interesting observation. I had seen my own social network items up there in search results but never something from my "friends". Google+ has been picking up more lately. I'll have to go back and check how and what I have in there to see what people might get from me in their search results.
Just signed up - timing should work perfect. Thanks again Jeremy! Enjoy your weekend!
Wow! Very interesting stuff. Would love to take the class but have other commitments. I'll keep an eye out for more. Thakns so much for sharing!
Jeremy, I am sick that I missed THE Presentation. I hope you will consider a repeat!
Jeremy...Looks like someone must have deleted a prior comment, I hesitated to leave comment #22. Thanks as always for the "Tech" - side of blogging .
Michelle Carr-Crowe for someone with so many points, I'm surprised at your comment. It's against impolite to promote yourself and link off in a comment on some else's post.
Jeremy, great information, thanks for sharing (I mean it!).
Ok Lord I am so lost! Can I go back and view this presentation on uTube or some other platform?
