A couple of years ago, I wrote a post called "How to Get Over 100 Comments on Your Blog Posts - A Retrospective". It was featured, and it received a lot of attention, then it was hijacked by my friends, and it ended up getting over 3,000 comments. At some point, it
wouldn't load anymore, which is why I didn't include the link. Since I don't have access to that one, it's not a great teaching tool when I'm working with newbie bloggers. With that in mind, I decided to write another one, in an effort to illustrate which of my posts have received the most attention within this community.
(In case you were wondering, yes, that's the typewriter I use to compose each and every post, while seated in a patch of clover.)
To date, I have 73 posts that have topped the 100 mark on comments, including the one I mentioned above.
I am thankful to each of my 1,935 subscribers, and to the AR staff for paying more than my fair share of attention to what I write, and perhaps most of all, I am happy to have received just over 44,000 comments on this blog since I started back in August 2007.
So, without further ado, what types of posts bring the most comments? Here are the categories which seem to garner the most remarks, at least for me:

I ALWAYS love reading your blogs, Jason! I have bookmarked this one so I can go into some of your previous blogs when I have more time. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Great titles to your blogs. I see that's at least part of the secret to getting more readers and comments. I will also read more of these when I have time. Thanks for sharing.
Jason - A great collection for anyone who is new to blogging and even one like me who wants to catch up. Bookmarked!
Dude - you so rock. I have so much to learn from you! We all do!!
Featured in BananaTude for the Austin Dude!
Jesus! It's like being back in high school again, loaded down with homework that I'd never do! (I'll check out some of your post though, Jason. I always like your writing)
Good evening Jason,
This is definitely one to Bookmark! Thanks Jason!
Wow! Eric thinks you are Jesus - those are some big shoes to fill. ;) Thanks for giving us the tips.
Jason, You have lots to be proud of! If only I could be more like you!
Holy bageezers I haven't even written 1/20th of the amount of blogs you have. You are such an inspiration! Thanks for sharing all your insight with us.
Jason- first of all I'm trying to get the image of you sitting in a field of clover with that typewriter out of my mind!!! Bluebonnets, yes! I don't know whether to be depressed (at all of your excellent work), impressed (which I most definitely am) or regressed (I could go back to writing 3 posts a month). Instead, I think I'll take my time to go and study the links to your posts!
Um, WOW! What a great collection of posts...thanks for this. :o)
Jason...
I miss the comment chat and the hijackings. It is rare now to get over 100 comments on a post ... I remember when it happened a lot!
Richard - I also really miss those days. I would be happy to join you in a good old-fashioned hijacking, or to allow one of mine to go off track. :)
Jason,
Nice post although I don't see you as the Irish type sitting there in the clover pounding out your blogs on that typewriter.
Jason,
Seriously amazing!!! You are the man. I need to be a bit more awake to go through this and see how I can use it:-)
All the best, Michelle - the morning person
This may border on cruel! Do you know how long it's going to take me to read all those articles?!
Well you just gave me my 2011 list of "what posts to read" LOL
Man. You did it again. I have to bookmark this one to save all these great posts for thee clueless one, ME.
Jason- I have to confess. I just spent the past hour and half going though some of them and I have bookmarked this as I have many more to go. As a newer member in the Rain, I find this type of post super helpful. It's a real how-to for a new bloggers and also good advice for new agents. I've subscribed so I can learn from your future nuggets of wisdom :)
Jason, that's a lot of comments. I'm going to have to come back to this and read all the other posts. Very interesting stuff here.
Hi Jason - I will need to set aside some time to see what made some of your posts so interesting to generate so many comments.
Wow, what a wealth of information! Thanks very much for sharing. I guess I'll be coming back to this blog over and over again.
That is a lot of comments. . .and a plethora of good posts worth reading again. .
Jason there is no doubt you have written a lot of great articles. I am sure I have read most of them:)
Jason - WOW, you are so organized! I'm soooo impressed! There are several of your older posts that I want to go back and read.....I'll be up into the wee hours of the night reading!!! And yet another great idea to get more comments on your posts. Have a great day!
Jason ~ Somehow, some way, I plan to read all of your posts ~ before I turn 100 ~ Impressed to the max
I remember that post, it was great. I miss the hijacking days too, some really funny stuff came from them. I've only got 2 posts that have gone over 100 comments. I've got some catching up to do!
Wow, Dude- this is a GREAT list! Looks like I've got some reading to do.... I've bookmarked this one. It's super freezing here in Colo, and school was cancelled, so I guess I know what I'll be doing.... Thanks!
Jason
This is a terrific list of categories that seem to appeal to readers here on AR that should provide plenty of ideas for folks who may struggle with what to write about.
I suspect many of us, were we to think about it, would likely come up with a similar list of general topic areas. Some will more likely appeal to AR members, while others are better for consumers. I can certainly appreciate how much time you spent assembling this list.
Jeff
Jason, I think it is important to distinguish who was the target audience as well. Is the post geared to colleagues, or clients etc. Great post, btw what are the rules of blog battle.....
Jason,
Let me pick my jaw up from the floor. You've certainly found the art and skill of blogging, as well as the appreciation and support of Active Rain.... g
Jason,
The only thing that did it for me was to include 50 names. Once was enough, for me.
"(In case you were wondering, yes, that's the typewriter I use to compose each and every post, while seated in a patch of clover.)"
Just, how many post do you wright sitting in the clover?
Bill
There's nothing like a good hijacking. It's especially fun if it is done to an unsuspecting newbie:)
And to Gerry, the only rule to Blog Battle is "Do Not Talk About Blog Battle!"
Jason...that is a lot of people looking up to you! Also, some great writing
Wow Jason...is there a prize for the comment that guesses how long it took you to link all those posts? You know, like the number of jelly beans in a jar? That is an awesome list and I am going back to read several of them...
Jason, I'll be proud to be commenter #36 on this one. I love getting lots of comments but I'm so NOT in your league. I've enjoyed my time here in the rain and I will keep on blogging and commenting. It's fun and it works.
Dude, that is a lot of comments and keystrokes; keep on blogging!
Good stuff jason, I've noticed that the posts that provide content that people want and learn from definitely get the most comments.
Some Dudes just got it going on, and you definitely do! Bookmarked!
Ok....so this is a lot to read through! What a great collection of posts, I've bookmarked this and I'm going to review when I have more time and make sure I have all the good information here learned and put to good use.
Just putting this post together must have been quite time-consuming and a labor of love at the same time. You've gained quite a following over the years Jason, and deservedly so.
You've given us the creme de la creme Jason. It is why I subscribe, but there are many lesser known posts that strike a direct chord with a reader whether it's zero comments or 100's. AR is an amalgam of many RE thoughts and interests, exactly why it works for so many.
Keep Austin Weird and keep the posts coming.
Heck, I bookmarked this just for the list of posts you've done! Amazing! but what do you want to bet some of those posts that got "tantalizingly close" to 100 comments will now go over that mark because of this post? I'll wager more than a few, and deservedly so! Great work, Jason!
Jason, you set a great example, for a lot of things. This is a valuable post more for the guidance it presents to making our personal posts more productive. Thanks for sharing.
Well done Jason! You've been such a great contributor this community and a HUGE support to me! For that I for one say Thanks, and I'm proud to be one of your 1,917 subscribers!!
P.S. - I'm pretty sure I've read most of these but have bookmarked to make sure I've not missed a one.
Jason, I need to go back and read some of the mentioned posts....one can always learn something from reading.
Hey Jason, Your work here is always a great read. The comments generated document the quality of what you bring us. Well done !
Great post, thats why I love reading your stuff, its always helpful!
Hi Jason --- a great list. Thanks so much for sharing. I am now a subscriber and looking forward to more great and informative posts like this!
Jason, thank you for this post. This will stay in my bookmark and you are truly an inspiration. I have subscribed via google reader so nothing will be missed!
Jason...Thanks.
I will be burning the midnight oil.
Bookmarked - some reading for us to complete now. And now subscribed so you are at least 1,918.
Mel
That the AR category is the largest shows that there is a lot of talking amongst ourselves. What would you say are the top "Posts That Generate Listings and Sales"?
Jason - I am in awe - but this is certainly the way for a great guy like you to teach all the Rainers how to get comments!
Jason: As I am sure you will recall, I used to read and comment on your posts quite a bit. But then... long ago... your posts seemed to become the "in place"... for this group of ten or twelve hijackers to invade. You seemed quite happy to join in with them... as they just totally took over your posts. It turned into their own private little party.
Time and time again I saw this happen. I continued for awhile to read and comment, but as time wore on... I just got tired of it... and bored with it, as well... and gave up. I just don't do "gradeschool" very well... and that is what I thought all that hijacking was. My apologies for being so critical... but this post seemed to finally be a good time for me to get that out.
Jason:
Man, it will take me months to read all your post. And the result will be me being jealous and not being able to write a single blog because I can't write as well as you. No fair and not helpful. But I appreciate your info.
I've noticed that word here a couple of times in the last few days: hijacking.
Since I hadn't heard of it before, I was curious - but now I think maybe Karen Anne's comment gave me a clue. .
Ok, so you got all your best posts together, and now, wahat am I supposed to do? Sit and read all of them & then do all this blogging? Too much work! LOL, just write some for me will ya!
"Listing nightmare! - Neighbor's home to be burned down -- on purpose! "
I would have thought that would have gotten me a few comments. It only garnered a couple....
What would you have used as a title instead? thanks for the tips Jason.
Karen Anne - I'm surprised at your comment, but I respect your opinion on that. Interestingly enough, the people you're talking about have mostly left ActiveRain altogether. I see them hanging out on Facebook now. A couple of the posts I mentioned above were hijacked, but most were not. I hope you will reconsider and come back. :)
Thomas - First of all, do you ever go by Tom? I would be tempted to do so if I had your name. :) Next, part of the reason that these got so many comments was because I spent a good deal of time building an audience and/or they got featured. I think your title is terrific.
Yes, I do go by Tom also - I didn't fool you! :) Great idea.
Jason all I have to say is WOWziers! You've got such a talent for writing & THANK YOU for sharing it with us! I've bookmarked this post so I can go back & read your list of blogs :D
What a list! I have bookmarked it for later reference. Thanks.
Jason, thank you so much!!! I'm going to bookmark you and subscribe to your blog.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Carmela :)
Hi,

I've only had one featured post in my brief time here on ActiveRain, and I think it got about 50 or 60 comments, so I'm definitely in the minor leagues (maybe just little league) when it comes to the blogosphere....but I'm learning every day. Thanks for all of your humorous and educational posts that keep us all focused on the goal...hitting a million points, errrr, uhhh, I mean generating leads for my business.
Hold on, what's the point of all this again? Focus, Matt, Focus!
This is a great and informative post.Well, the points given were facts that could never go wrong. I have visited so many pages with the same discussion and topics

Jason this is great and goes perfectly with this weeks post on WHAT WERE YOUR TOP 10 AR POSTS OF 2011.
Great post. It was just reblogged so I got to read it. Bookmarked too. Thanks
