No more FAN Pages on Facebook!

No more fans on Facebook, just "likes and interests". Your fan page is now called an “Official Page” and your fans will be friends who go to a page and click on the like button to like the page.  This change was introduced with the new Facebook Connections settings.

become a fan changes to like button on facebook

Facebook’s changes are promoting consistent features across the site and to make connecting with your brand a bit less intimidating.

  • Instead of becoming a raving fan, people will be able to connect with you by just stating they like your page.
  • Your Official page will be listed on the “Likes and Interests” section of their profile.
  • The person who likes your page will be displayed on your page saying they liked your Official Page.
  • Your Official Page’s posts will be displayed on their newsfeed.

To like an Official Page, users need to go to the page and click on the Like Button to say they like the page.  If a friend sees on their newsfeed that you liked a particular page, they cannot click like to connect to the page directly.

Liking a page is different than liking a status update, picture, link, video or any other piece of content shared on Facebook.

I love this change. Do you?  Would you go and see if you like my page? ;)

I think changes have made facebook a better tool for marketers and small business owners/independent professionals.  It continues to evolve from child's play to the ultimate marketing tool and thus it continues to grow exponentially.

Enjoy!!!

Hi Elayna, Thanks for the post.

I was on FB earlier this evening and had no idea this was on the way. I think they could announce their changes better.

I like your social buttons styles, they are nice and clean to read and understand. I think it is time to upgrade my own.

Posted by John B. Joseph (Groupe Sutton Centre-Ouest, Westmount) about 2 years ago

Elayna:

Actually, I don't like this change at all. Nothing's broke, so why fix it? Does anybody ever feel intimidated to be a "fan" of a page? Are these the same people who jump at their own shadow?

What I really want is a "dislike" button, and also the ability to hide certain types of posts without hiding everything from that person!

Elayna - Thanks for the "heads up"...bookmarked. Was going to set up a fan page but will first review your info. ~ Thanks again, Doug

Hi Elayna - I was already a Fan of your page (and your AR blog), so of course I like it! I also like seeing which of my friends like a particular page; that provides another level to connect on.

Posted by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace) about 2 years ago

I think this change will be more confusing than anything-at least in the near term.  What I know I dont like is the restriction on seeing who all my fans, oops...I mean Likes are.  Depending on the day, Yesterday I couldnt see all of my fans, today I could)... Before I could see alll of my fans, now I cannot, this does not seem like an upgrade to me.  I guess we will ahve to wait and see.

Elayna, I hate it for this reason....

You cannot see ALL of the people who LIKED your page. This also means you cannot send each person an individual message either. I used to go through and send a personal note to each person thanking them for being a fan and asking them to also suggest the page to their friends. This is a major reason how I was able to get one page to 1500 fans and the other to 1000 in only one month. Now this is gone.

I love social media... yet a lot of networks like Facebook remind me of Saturday morning TV. I like this change. It's makes things a little more mature and I don't have to 'fan up' to connect. It implies room for growth and relationship. Fan, I'm a little uncomfortable with sometimes. Where do you go after fan, raving fan, adoring fan? I like what you do, let's leave it at that. I'll be a fan if I choose to keep showing up on your page because I like what you put there, right? ;0)

Posted by René Fabre (First American Title) about 2 years ago

I don't see why there need to be a change to the fan page in FaceBook. I think it will be confusing to most and you can't see who is a part of your fan page.

There didn't seem anything wroung with the way it was. How does that affect the fans we already have from our business page, are they still fans? or do they now have to go back at some time and click that they like it?

I'm neutral on this change right now. I see no added benefit to this change, at least not yet. I have seen no announcement that fan pages are now called Official pages, can you tell me where you saw that? I have 3 pages, which one is my OFFICIAL official page?? I didn't particularly like it when they were called fan pages, either. It's a Business Page, and that's what it should be referred to, IMHO. "Fan Page" made it sound too much like a buch of groupies following a rock star or something! Also, I can "like" a page (or anything else, for that matter) without necessarily being a "fan" of a page. I think the distinction may be minor, but should be considered nonetheless. I suppose time will tell if this change is a good one or not.

Actually after getting bombarded with hundreds of requests to be fans of this and fans of that has really turned me off to facebook.

There is no doubt it is a great social networking  tool........but their applications are annoying and yes I turned most if not all off....

I have heard from old friends and family from decades gone by........it is always good to catch up on lives and happenings....

I still post and poke ..

I am more interested in what is going on with people than the applications...i guess to each their own...

Every month, FB seems to become a more essential piece of the marketing puzzle -- and the stats seem to confirm this. FB Official Pages can generate leads, revenue, and strengthen customer loyalty. So thanks for this important update! I mostly see the upsides, although I'm guessing that by making it easier for people to Like pages, it will also mean that we'll be 'competing' with a lot more pages in our friends Interests sections.   But that's okay, it just means will have to be more diligent about making our Pages unique and valuable for viewers!

Wow!  I did not receive an update of your comments so I joined the party kind of late.  I know Facebook is a waste of time to many, but so is e-mail or the phone if you don't use it right.  If you go on it with a goal (or two or three) in mind, you can be sure you will be building valuable relationships and generating qualified leads.

This change is very valuable because the more FANS aka CONNECTIONS you have, the more people you communicate with.  Yes, you can see who likes your page, and better yet, you can send updates and receive information as to the metrics of your page interactions. People won't give you their e-mail and "becoming a fan" was truly endorsing your brand, but "liking" it  is more casual, laid back, if you will.

I look forward to connecting on Facebook and THANK YOU for liking my page!   Have a POWERFUL weekend!
