Colorado Springs Tuberculosis Huts

Colorado Springs Tuberculosis Huts

At one time, Colorado Springs, due to it dry climate, was thought to be the perfect place to recover from Tuberculosis, or Consumption. There was a camp installed in the mountains where folks came an stayed until they were better. Of course, without antibotics, I'm not sure how they ever got better! Anyway, here's a great little promotional video from the hay-day of the Tuberculosis camps in town. Enjoy!

Marianne:

Are the huts still there?  What happened to them?

Hi Marianne,  You find the most interesting videos!  I kept thinking about Doc Holliday as I watched this, even though he died several before - too bad he went to Glenwood Springs instead of Colorado Springs :-)

Marianne - That is truly interesting.  I had no idea that the climate was that dry, nor had I ever heard of tuberculosis camps before I saw this post.  Thanks - I learned something new today!

No, Mike, they aren't there any more. However the main buildings are; they are used as a monestery.

Hi Mary, you have more information than I do about Doc Holiday. I've love to read your post on it! LOL

We are so dry here, that we we actually have a lower humidty than Tucson, Jason. Sometimes I feel like I'm so dry that I'm going to crumble and blow away!

Very interesting video!  It's nice to know some history about Colorado Spring!

Thanks for sharing!

So cool, Marianne!  I love the historical videos you come up with!  Mary is right, Doc Holliday discovered he had TB while in Leadville, dealing cards in a saloon, and went to Glenwood Springs for a lower elevation, and the Hot Springs.  He died and is buried there.  I've taken the hike up to his very unassuming gravesite, surrounded by a little wrought iron fence.

I didn't realize, Cheryl, that Doc Holliday was burried in Glenwood Springs. But I love the hot springs there. I can never get enough of putting my body into warm water. LOL

Wow that is really interesting though I have to agree with you.  How the heck did they get better?  LOL

So, right you are, Debra! My hubs thought that the dry air here might have made them feel better because of how the air will suck all moisture from you!
