Wordless Wednesday - Signs of Spring and Summer

Greig Farm Red Hook NY

Today being wordless Wednesday I was looking for a shot to highlight.  This crate and farm stand caught my attention. This is a scene that screams spring and summer.

Dutchess County is an area with many pick-your-own farms and farm stands.  With everyone tightening their belts this is one inexpensive activity that can delight a family.

Tranquility A SPA in Red Hook NY

I first met Sally Ann McGlade at a  Mid Hudson Women Networking even. She was so warm and welcoming that I was not surprised to learn that she was the owner of a spa.

Tranquility SPA Red Hook NY

Tranquilty is a day SPA located in the village of Red Hook and has been in operation for the last 2 1/2 years.  According to Sally Ann, now more than ever, we all need to take time out to pamper ourselves and her spa caters both to women and men.

Sally has over 25 years in the beauty business and has also worked as an instructor at a beauty school. She has a passion for helping people look and feel their best.

This spa offers many services. On the day I stopped in I met one of her regular clients, Andrea, who was in for the works.  She was especially looking forward to the microderm abrasion because, now that spring was here, it was time to get rid of those dead skin cells and make the skin breathe.  Looking at her skin I think I too will be going in to rejuvenate my skin.

Tranquility offers a variety of individual services such as:

  • Massages
  • Manicures
  • Pedicures
  • Waxing
  • Facials
  • Microderm Abrasion
  • Ionic Detox Foot Therapy

Clients have come from as far south as Westchester and it is possible to book a full day package.  A husband and wife might want to do this to treat themselves, or a group of girl friends looking to spend a day together pampering themselves may opt for the full-day package.

The Ionic Detox foot therapy is also another popular service, this was featured in the Poughkeepsie Journal's "Living & Being"  A guide to wellness in April 2008.

Speechless Sunday - Purple my garden

Purple Flower I so love all the vibrant colors to be found in nature.  So after a long harsh winter I can't wait for the flowers to color my world.  I love a variety of colors but over the last few years I have added many shades of purple to purple my garden.

Old Dutch Village Garden Club Red Hook NY - Bonsai and more

I managed to fit in the February 12th Garden Club meeting into my schedule; the topic that day was Bonsai.  Although I love gardening, that is one aspect I never thought I would want to try.  The Presenter was Michael Devlin whose talk and show and tell kept us all engaged.  He brought in several different creations - one he had nurtured for 40 years.

He started out by stating that Bonsai should not be given as a gift to extremely busy people and I suppose that's a category I am in.

So here are a few tips I picked up.

  1. You know a Bonsai needs to be repotted if you stick a chopstick in the soil and it has problem going down.
  2. Repotting should be done every 2-3 years.  You will trim away a good portion of the root system.
  3. The selection of potting is important.  Other materials needed are, stone, gravel, moss, clamps, wiring
  4. You can train the tree by using clamps and wiring. This should be done in April -September.
  5. During November-February fertilizer should not be used  since the plants need to rest.

So where can you find Bonsai locally? At The Phantom Gardener in Rhinebeck.  Mr. Devlin will also be doing a presentation there on October 19th.

The Old Dutch Village Garden Club is a great place for garden lovers and also a place to meet others from the community.  This is a place where visitors are always welcome and at the end of the meeting there are refreshments. The members take turns hosting this.

So, here is the rest of the schedule for the year. I hope you will find a topic that interests you.
