The Beauty Of Madison County KY On A Country Drive - Richmond KY

The Beauty Of Madison County KY On A Country Drive - Richmond KY

Yesterday was the perfect day to tour around on some of the back roads in Madison County KY with an old friend I hadn't seen in years.

We headed out of Richmond KY on Barnes Mill Road through Mule Shed Lane to Takes Creek Road, then across the Valley View Ferry and drove on to Lexington to stop in at Orange Leaf for yummy yogurt.

Sure, it was a round about way to get to Lexington, but Madison County really has some nice scenery to enjoy.

As usual, there is way too much eye-candy that I find interesting and beautiful.

I particularly like old barns/houses, rustic stores and misspelled signs when I can run across them. As I go through my summer, I will post the ones I find.

This was an old tobacco barn that has clearly been totally taken over by vines and weeds. Good idea to keep the vegetation under control at your house. Get out there and cut those vines and trees back.

I was surprised to find a new covered bridge! The sign on the front said "Bridge of Madison County".

It's amazing how green and lush everything looks since we had so much rain this spring. It has made everything beautiful.

When I moved into my home, it was a barren wasteland of construction weeds, clay soil and buried trash.(Like bricks, wire, cans, broken concrete, etc.)

Now after 7 years, I can say that I have revamped it all a few times.

I've added at least 30 trees and loads of flowers. This past fall, I added a raised flower bed to plant vegetables.

The fruit trees in the yard are nectarines, pears, peaches and cherries.

Plants for food are blueberries, blackberries, yellow tomatoes, red peppers, cucumbers, kale, spinach, lettuce, red and sweet potatoes and herbs.

This is my first year to try knock out roses. I thought they were doing well untill today ...now i see something has been eating the leaves. Now I will have to investigate that!

I love the swing under the deck to relax and check out my plants. It also gives me a great view of the creek and Sycamore trees in the shaded woods behind the house.

My best advice for landscaping your home is plant whatever makes you happy!

Stay tuned for my blog post on revamping the front porch!

Kentucky Rain... Sounds Better In A Song!

The Kentucky rain is starting to get on my nerves! Don't take me wrong...I do like the rain normally.

The last week or so has been a misery and today the tornado warning was my alarm clock bright and early.

It hasn't been the first alarm we have had in the past week or so. It's like crying wolf so many times and nothing happens. Even my dog runs to the basement automatically when she hears the alarm go off.

Now, Kentucky rain stormI just keep everything I think is vital to living in the basement just in case.

Tonight the rain is coming down like a monsoon and the creek behind my house is almost as high as I have ever seen it.

Almost up to the newly mulched trees. It has a way to go to be in the basement.

I'm praying that it will finally slow a bit and not get in.

Seriously thinking about a new houseboat office in the backyard.

What a misery a flood could be!

Stop And Go BBQ in Richmond KY

Stop and Go For Two World Famous BBQ Recipes in Richmond KY

Stop and Go Richmond KY World Famous BBQ picture by Lizette Fitzpatrick

When you live in the South, you grow up eating BBQ.

You learn pretty quick that people have their favorite recipes passed down through the family or invent new ones that are fabulous.

Summer weekends at festivals have backyard chefs competing for trophies and bragging rights of whose sauce reigns supreme!

Growing up in Madison County, Kentucky, I can remember my parents taking me to some wonderful BBQ joints in the area and Mom has a great recipe that I still use.

Over time I have traveled around and out of state to be able to taste some wonderful Bar-B-Q. Maybe, I have become a fan of BBQ after lifetime of tasting all the varieties. Wet, dry, hot, mild, spicy, exotic, but mainly the top-secret Southern BBQ sauce.

There's something down home about Bar-B-Q. It's comforting and filling. No wonder there are so many people that absolutely love it and have cook offs to prove how good the recipe might be.Stop and Go Richmond KY World Famous BBQ picture by Lizette Fitzpatrick

The other day, I finally made it to the Stop and Go on Water Street in Richmond, Kentucky. I had heard for years that the Bar-B-Q of Robert Miller and Russell Cantrell was legendary.

What I didn't know beforehand, was that the famous sauce was actually two separate recipes.

Robert's sauce is used on chicken wings and Russell's sauce is for beef brisket, pulled pork & ribs.

As I walked inside the diner, I was warmly greeted at the counter by Christine Chadwell, cashier.

Both owners, Russell and Robert were busy cooking but you could easily tell they were the heartbeat of the Stop and Go, winners of the 2009 Minority Business of the Year from The Chamber of Commerce.

Russell Cantrell, Stop and Go Richmond KY World Famous BBQ picture by Lizette FitzpatrickAs I settled in to do a taste test, I noticed how busy the place was. There were three patrons at the counter but lots of folks would stop to pick up food...then go!

Katie Brenner, Mikey Valentine & Amanda Sowers-Durbin, Stop and Go Richmond KY World Famous BBQ picture by Lizette Fitzpatrick

My tasty review included BBQ beef brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken wings, cole slaw, potato salad and baked beans.

Russell uses his secret recipe on the ribs, pulled pork and brisket. It was my first time to eat beef brisket and he knew I was going to love it!

The pulled pork, brisket and ribs had just the right amount of sauce and flavor after marinating overnight and smoked up to 10 hours over hickory, apple and pecan wood before grilling. It was clearly some of the best BBQ I have ever tasted.

Robert Miller, Stop and Go Richmond KY World Famous BBQ picture by Lizette Fitzpatrick

Next up was Robert's chicken wings in his secret sauce. Amazing taste and the wings would surely be something to disappear first off the table at a party.

By now it was hard to pick a favorite. Robert also prepares the baked beans and gives them some extra seasonings.

The cole slaw was creamy and had just the right ingredients. The menu also includes a fish sandwich and he does the special breading.

Christine's potato salad was heavenly and just the perfect blend.

Stop and Go cateringThere's something for everyone on the menu even hamburgers.

It's plain to see that the Stop and Go is a well maintained diner that has all the perfect ingredients of great BBQ, happy atmosphere and a down home charm. They do catering too!

Give Russell or Robert a call at 859-353-5451 or see them in action at 115 East Water Street in Richmond, KY.

Extreme Home New Construction In Kentucky

Question:

Lizette, I've been told that it usually takes 4 -6 months to build a house. Will I have to wait that long? I only need one that is about 1500 square feet. That seems like a long time.  Mike A.

Time and moneyAnswer:

Mike A., It really depends on the builder and the weather.

Well... maybe the sub-contractors too.

I just closed on a house today that took just a little over a month to build.

I asked the builder what was the fastest house he ever built start to finish and he said '14 days!'

What was amazing was the quality of this builder's homes. Absolutely top quality.

One of my home inspectors said the quality was unusual for a smaller home. There was pride in the workmanship. Not even a bad spot of paint anywhere during my final walk-through.

The difference may be that the builder has his own team of seasoned professionals for every job on the construction and he owned his own heavy equipment.

No sub-contractors used at all. Kind of like watching extreme home makeover at work. With the right team...miracles can happen.

KODAK Moment - Wood Bridges That are Vanishing From Madison County KY

KODAK Moment - Wood Bridges That are Vanishing From Madison County KY

As I was looking for one of my favorite pictures to enter into the Kodak Moment contest, I found this favorite moment that I had one summer day in Madison County KY.

I had been out touring homes with a client near US 25 in Richmond and after I drove across this wood bridge I stopped to take a few pictures for later. Good thing I did.

Now this bridge is gone. Yes, it's not even there now. Hard to imagine that something this beautiful is gone.   Most of the wooden bridges I remember seeing all my life in Madison County have vanished.

wood bridge

Over the years, I have taken pictures of old stores, bridges and buildings all around Madison County and Richmond. I'm always sad to see that now they are gone too. That's progress, I guess.

Right now in Central Kentucky, we are experiencing extremely cold weather. Last night snow and today a freezing rain.  Brrrr! This picture makes me have hope that we will be warm again.

It's rare to experience all this snow and cold before Christmas. My mother commented yesterday that it reminded her of the weather back in the 50's and 60's. I do remember seeing old pictures of us kids playing in lots of snow. Maybe she is right.

I wonder if this has anything to do with global warming?

Psychic Hal Predictions and Over-Time Counter Offers

Psychic Readings by Psychic HalI'm usually good at guessing how things are going to turn out. Every now and then, I get blind-sided by someone or something.

Wouldn't it be nice to always know what was going to happen with each of our offers?

Like what is the magic number to get an offer accepted?

I have to admit that I can usually get pretty close in a guess of what the price of the deal will be.

Couldn't that save lots of time if I was right every time??

Today, I have been working on two different offers.

One was accepted and I was $1000 off in my prediction. My first time home buyer is totally excited!

The second offer is still being negotiated and I'm wondering if it will get finished tonight. Looks like we are going into over-time. I'm hoping the delay is a good sign. I wonder what Psychic Hal would say about this deal!

Richmond Pottery Festival and Kids Fest - Irvine McDowell Park - Richmond KY - Crimson Duval

Richmond Pottery Festival and Kids Fest - Irvine McDowell Park - Richmond KY - Crimson Duval

The best kept secrets around for a place to find great handmade pottery is the Richmond Pottery Festival. There is something for everyone and also a Kids Fest that is presented byMeijers. The location is in historic Irvine McDowell Park right on Lancaster Ave.

Richmond Pottery Festival and Kids Fest - Crimson Duval - Lizette RealtyOne of the featured potters is Richmond KY artist Crimson Duval.

I found out about her pottery a few years ago when I bought one piece at an event where I was displaying my own art.

This one item has kept me intrigued to the point I wanted to start a collection of her artistic style of functional dishware.

Commissioned dishware can also be designed if you wish to have more matched pieces of a specific piece of Crimson's designs.

I feel this is truly an imaginative and unique style that will be a future collectible.

Take A Scenic Drive To Valley View Ferry - KY 169 - Tates Creek Rd - Kentucky

The most fun way to drive to Lexington KY from Richmond KY is to take KY 169 (Tates Creek Rd) to Valley View and ride the famous ferry across the Kentucky River.

Every creek in Kentucky has a road beside it. Well... not all, but most of them do.

Kentucky is second behind Alaska for the state with the most waterways. How did the roads develop? I have to wonder if they first had Indians and settlers walking along them to get to the next settlement.

The paths became wider over time with wagons and carriages. Later were paved in asphalt to become our modern day roads.

One of my favorite ones is Tates Creek Road between Richmond and Lexington.

The trees are a green tunnel that has a leafy ceiling in the spring and summer. Later in the fall turns into a multi-color petals that swirl around your car as you drive through.

Valley View Ferry Richmond KY

What is wonderful about Tates Creek Road is that it stops at the Kentucky River at a little place called Valley View. To get across the river you will need to drive your car aboard a ferry that holds 3 cars.

The Valley View Ferrywas established in 1792 and now owned by the state. It is the oldest continuous business in Kentucky. It's free of charge to use.

I hear you knocking but you can't come in...

I hear you knocking but you can't come in...

Yellow birdThe other day as we were working in the office, Jane, my assistant said, "Lizette come in here, there is a bird that keeps pecking on the window!"

I thought she was kidding. So I came into her office to see since I could clearly hear some tapping on the glass.

Over and over he tapped on our window and would perch himself in the tree to look into the window.

He did seem to want to hang around and wasn't afraid of us.

Grabbing one of my cameras, I was able to snap this picture of him.

I believe he was an American Goldfinch.

It was nice to see him and wonder what the message was that day.

Maybe, it was just for us to slow down and take a break. Real estate can be a stressful business. Don't take things so seriously. We did get a good laugh from watching him. What a beauty he was!
