In golf there is an affliction called the “yips.” The symptoms usually involve twitching, pulling, shaking, or even temporary blindness right before an important putt is attempted.
The condition is very real, and many a match has been lost because an otherwise steady stoke gives way to one or more elements of the psychological condition.
It is also possible to experience the “yips: in the business world. It usually starts a few days before an important transaction, and can lead to sleeplessness, anxiety, and overreaction.
The fear of failure is overwhelming and powerful. Even the most confident person can succumb to the pressures of the day.
What’s the cure? I wish that I knew. Preparation and skill development can go a long way towards overcoming the phenomenon, but there are no guarantees.
And even if you start shaking and go blind, you still have to make the putt!
